The Design of the Mind and Body Part 3

For this post, I’m going to use a car as an analogy for the body. I know this is a simple analogy, and most readers will find it to be something that they already know or understand. However, it’s helpful to step back and really consider this concept.

Our bodies are far more complex than cars—they’re more amazing than cars, too. But cars are fairly complex machines, and it’s impressive what they can do. In some ways, our bodies are like cars. In other ways, they are not. Unlike cars, our bodies are capable of healing themselves. Our bodies can recover from the damage that occurs as we navigate our way through life.

However, cars, just like our bodies, require the right kind of information in order to function well for you. Again, I know this seems like common sense, but consider my perspective for a moment. Almost every day in my clinics, I see people who are feeling very poorly and diagnosed with chronic diseases. As I review the potential causes of their poor health, it becomes evident that their eating habits, lack of movement, stress levels, and dysfunctional sleep patterns are often what leads them to feel so bad. Even after it’s very clear that these are the source of their poor health, they still ask for other strategies to try and feel better rather than fixing the root issues.

I understand this and don’t judge them. We live in a time where we’re looking for quick fixes. We don’t want to do the hard work that it takes to experience our best health. We’re confident there must be a prescription that can do it for us. But at the end of the day, the only way to experience your best health is to actually fix the root causes that influence our health.

Our bodies can recover from the damage that occurs as we navigate our way through life.

If you’ve invested in a car that’s very important to you, you will generally take care of it. I know that’s not true for everybody, but most will. People take time to service their cars, wash their cars, and care for their cars. They put a lot of value on their cars because their cars are a source of transportation, which is vital for many people. In addition, their cars are a source of pleasure. They enjoy driving them, experiencing them, and the freedom that having a car can provide them.

However, for a car to function properly, it has to be cared for properly. Cars have to have the right kind of fuel, they have to have their oil changed, and they have to have other forms of servicing. They have to have tires rotated and their alignment checked. They have to be driven properly. If they’re abused, they’ll eventually break down.

In order for our cars to provide us with the best driving experience, and to last as long as we hope they will, we have to treat them according to their design. You cannot pour something other than gasoline into your car’s engine and have it work for you. You cannot neglect the basic services that allow it to perform well. You can’t continue to drive it while it’s out of alignment, and not have it begin to mechanically break down.

You often don’t notice the diminished performance of your car. In the very beginning, it might be that the ride’s a little bumpier, the acceleration is reduced, or the handling’s a little bit different. At first, you may not notice these subtle changes in performance. But there’s no doubt they’re influencing your experience of driving.

It’s very similar with your body. If you’re neglecting your body, it cannot perform as well for you. Even if you think you feel fine, there’s a good chance you may not be. If you’re not providing your body with the right information, there’s a good chance you’re lacking the level of energy that you could potentially have. You aren’t getting the full experience of life that your body is capable of providing you.

If you’re neglecting your body, it cannot perform as well for you

If you don’t give your body what it needs, it will break down on you. You must be aware and pay attention to the signals your body is sending you. If you neglect these principles, you’ll eventually experience diseases in various forms. While there will be strategies to try and treat those diseases, they can’t necessarily restore the health you once possessed.

The only way that can happen is to go back to the drawing board and begin to treat your body and your mind according to its design.
